Seat Market Size in Africa
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the African seat market, when its value decreased by -2.8% to $X. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +66.0% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Seat Production in Africa
In value terms, seat production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Africa
Seat exports dropped to X tons in 2021, which is down by -10.2% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, seat exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Senegal (6.7%) and Ghana (6%). Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Rwanda (+51.4%), Nigeria (+10.4%), Tunisia (+6.7%), Morocco (+5.9%), Togo (+5.1%), Senegal (+2.8%) and Ghana (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo, Senegal, Tunisia, Ghana, Rwanda and Morocco increased by +4.1, +3.1, +2.7, +2.7, +2.4 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest seat supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.3% share.
In South Africa, seat exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+13.4% per year) and Morocco (+3.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 48% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Seat Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, seat imports in Africa expanded sharply to X tons, growing by 6.5% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 8% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, seat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw modest growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the key importers of seats, together creating 43% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons), Libya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+20.0%), Cameroon (+8.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7%), Burkina Faso (+2.4%), Tanzania (+2.0%) and Botswana (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-1.2%), Algeria (-1.6%), Morocco (-3.8%), Libya (-9.3%), Ghana (-12.1%) and Angola (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Botswana, Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire and Cameroon increased by +4, +2.3, +2, +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 35% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Algeria, Kenya, Angola, Senegal, Cameroon, Botswana and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, seat import price increased by +67.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
