In 2021, overseas shipments of self-adhesive paper and paperboard were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, self-adhesive paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates exports structure, together generating 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), achieving a 9.6% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +20.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 94% of total exports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of self-adhesive paper and paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, self-adhesive paper imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importer of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2021. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Morocco (8.5%), Egypt (7.4%), Kenya (6.5%) and Nigeria (5.8%). Tunisia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to self-adhesive paper imports into South Africa stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Uganda (+19.6%), Algeria (+16.3%), Nigeria (+14.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+9.7%), Morocco (+7.7%), Libya (+4.2%), Kenya (+3.8%) and Tunisia (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+9.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.2 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -11.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported self-adhesive paper and paperboard in Africa, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+14.9% per year) and Egypt (+2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
