After two years of decline, shipments abroad of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers increased by 13% to X units in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 162%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 55% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X units). All these countries together took approx. 11% share of total exports. Congo (X units), Lesotho (X units), Morocco (X units), Cameroon (X units), Seychelles (X units), Malawi (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a little share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers. At the same time, Lesotho (+41.7%), Seychelles (+35.1%), Tunisia (+33.4%), Malawi (+30.8%), Kenya (+10.7%), Congo (+6.2%), Burkina Faso (+3.9%) and Cameroon (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+5.7 p.p.), Lesotho (+3.4 p.p.), Seychelles (+2.2 p.p.) and Malawi (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Morocco (-4.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest full-rotation excavator supplier in Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 1.9% share.

In South Africa, full-rotation excavator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+28.0% per year) and Burkina Faso (+2.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 63% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Seychelles ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Full-rotation excavator imports rose rapidly to X units in 2021, growing by 13% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

South Africa (X units), Nigeria (X units), Morocco (X units), Sudan (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Ghana (X units), Guinea (X units), Angola (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Tanzania (X units), Mali (X units) and Senegal (X units) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +64.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers in Africa, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.9% share.
