The African semiconductor device market stood at $X in 2021, increasing by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a sharp decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor device production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, shipments abroad of semiconductor devices increased by 39% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor device exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a precipitous setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 65%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Burkina Faso (X units), Benin (X units), Morocco (X units) and Lesotho (X units), together accounting for 79% of total export. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), generating an 8% share of total exports. Uganda (X units) and Tunisia (X units) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +6,757.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco totaled +4.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-2.9% per year) and Burkina Faso (+118.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Benin (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+19.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of semiconductor devices imported in Africa skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 131% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15,703%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor device imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 125%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - South Africa (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Somalia (X units) - each recorded a 7.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +32.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Somalia (+137.4%), Burkina Faso (+14.4%) and Mozambique (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Somalia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +137.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-69.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+83 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.2 p.p.), Mozambique (+1.7 p.p.) and Somalia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -97.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest semiconductor device importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. Mozambique and Somalia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.5%.
Among the main importing countries, Somalia, with a CAGR of +61.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at less than $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -37.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 88,459% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+189.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
