Diode Market Size in Africa

The African diode market totaled $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -7.3% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diode production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -7.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 19%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes, when their volume increased by 120% to X units. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diode exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 266%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by South Africa (6%). Tunisia (X units), Egypt (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes. At the same time, Egypt (+1,217.7%), Tunisia (+65.6%) and South Africa (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +1,217.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-2.7%) and Namibia (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+12 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.9 p.p.), Egypt (+2.8 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-5.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest diode supplier in Africa, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco stood at +10.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+4.8% per year) and Egypt (+1,359.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -39.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 142%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes imported in Africa dropped sharply to X units, waning by -82.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 556%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, diode imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 213%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X units), distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Morocco (X units), South Africa (X units) and Egypt (X units) were the main importers of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes, together committing 84% of total imports. Rwanda (X units) and Algeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +18.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest diode importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 108% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
