The African sewing machine needle market shrank significantly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -43.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sewing machine needles decreased by -10.6% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +68.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sewing machine needle exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X units) held a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Rwanda (8.2%).

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sewing machine needles exports, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. Tunisia (-2.5%) and Rwanda (-34.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+20 p.p.) and Rwanda (+8.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Rwanda ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +6.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per thousand units, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 82% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per thousand units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per thousand units), while Rwanda ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+112.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of sewing machine needles decreased by -58.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 290%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sewing machine needle imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria dominates imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - South Africa (X units) and Rwanda (X units) - each amounted to a 3.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sewing machine needle imports into Nigeria stood at +14.6%. At the same time, Rwanda (+55.8%) and South Africa (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2022. Nigeria (+4.7 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sewing machine needles in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.7% share of total imports.

In Nigeria, sewing machine needle imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+6.6% per year) and Rwanda (+25.7% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, rising by 38% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per thousand units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per thousand units), while Rwanda ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
