In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 121%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), making up a 10% share of total exports. Sudan (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Libya (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+34.2%), Ethiopia (+20.3%) and Sudan (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-7.0%), Senegal (-11.4%) and Libya (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia, South Africa, Ethiopia and Sudan increased by +9.5, +7.3, +3.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ethiopia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ethiopia (+18.7% per year) and Namibia (-6.3% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 73%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -9.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -16.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the largest importers of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), together creating 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +59.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports.
