In general, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheet piling exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 103%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Zambia (8.9%) and Libya (6.4%). Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+26.6%) and Egypt (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-8.5%), Zambia (-11.9%), Uganda (-20.5%) and Libya (-34.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Egypt, Zambia, Nigeria and Tunisia increased by +40, +8.9, +2.8, +2.1 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sheet piling supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -6.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+0.1% per year) and Zambia (-18.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 262% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 122%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheet piling imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel), achieving 28% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held near 14% share of total imports. Cameroon (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 32% of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Cameroon, Tunisia, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Guinea, which together accounted for a further 36%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of +54.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
