Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cellulose fibrecement sheet exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporter of sheets, panels and tiles of cellulose fibrecement in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cellulose fibrecement sheet exports from South Africa stood at +5.5%. At the same time, Tanzania (+71.7%) and Kenya (+22.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.9%), Zimbabwe (-5.6%), Nigeria (-8.0%) and Egypt (-26.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+33 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.7 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria, Tunisia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -6.2% and -32% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cellulose fibrecement sheet supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, cellulose fibrecement sheet exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-5.1% per year) and Kenya (+23.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

Cellulose fibrecement sheet imports fell to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -6.5% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cellulose fibrecement sheet imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Algeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the largest importers of sheets, panels and tiles of cellulose fibrecement in Africa, together committing 35% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Benin (X tons). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Seychelles (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Seychelles (with a CAGR of +51.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cellulose fibrecement sheet importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Malawi ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 30% of total imports. Ghana, Namibia, Senegal, Egypt, Nigeria, Tanzania, Seychelles, Benin, Mozambique and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Seychelles, with a CAGR of +49.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
