Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Africa

The African shelled hazelnut market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Shelled Hazelnut Production in Africa

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Shelled Hazelnut Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shelled hazelnut exports in Africa declined markedly to X tons, falling by -52% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 717% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 558% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), generating a 21% share of total exports. Morocco (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+92.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +92.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-89.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia and Morocco increased by +21 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +15.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+113.0% per year) and Morocco (-89.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 183%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Shelled Hazelnut Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of shelled hazelnuts were imported in Africa; increasing by 21% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +109.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the main importer of shelled hazelnuts in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shelled hazelnut imports into Egypt stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Morocco (+28.4%) and Tunisia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-11.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+20 p.p.), Morocco (+6.8 p.p.) and Tunisia (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shelled hazelnuts in Africa, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+3.6% per year) and Morocco (+32.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
