In 2021, overseas shipments of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles increased by 0.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 193%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pyrotechnic articles exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), achieving a 5.5% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+40.4%) and Egypt (+38.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.), Egypt (+5.5 p.p.) and Botswana (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pyrotechnic articles supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -12.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+32.4% per year) and Botswana (+21.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 38% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 74%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles imported in Africa stood at X tons, remaining constant against 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 75%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrotechnic articles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mauritius (X tons), Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Chad (X tons) represented roughly 78% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), comprising a 5.9% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pyrotechnic articles importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +36.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pyrotechnic articles import price increased by +94.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
