Silk Yarn Market Size in Africa

The African silk yarn market fell slightly to $X in 2019, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The countries with the highest volumes of silk yarn production in 2019 were Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. These countries were followed by Egypt, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, Sudan, Algeria, Uganda, Somalia, Morocco and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of silk yarn production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Uganda, while silk yarn production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

Silk yarn exports was estimated at X tons in 2019, surging by X% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, silk yarn exports fell to $X in 2019. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, exports remained at a lower figure.

Tunisia was the main exporter of silk yarn in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2019. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Chad (X%).

Exports from Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -X% from 2007 to 2019. Chad experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Egypt (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2019 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, silk yarn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2019. Overall, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2019 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), creating a X% share of total imports. South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk yarn imports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007 to 2019. At the same time, Madagascar (+X%), Togo (+X%), Libya (+X%) and Morocco (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
