In 2021, the African silk yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, which decreased by -10.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 6.6%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk yarn exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tunisia was the main exporter of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 16% share of total exports.
Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste exports, with a CAGR of -10.0% from 2012 to 2021. Egypt (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -25.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest silk yarn supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
In Tunisia, silk yarn exports plunged by an average annual rate of -11.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.2%).
Silk Yarn Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, when their volume increased by 29% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 229%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, silk yarn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) represented the major importers of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in Africa, together reaching approx. 52% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 33% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +114.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 37% of total imports. Djibouti, Lesotho, Togo and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +92.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 47%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
