Semi-Manufactured Silver Market Size in Africa
The African semi-manufactured silver market dropped to $X in 2021, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Semi-Manufactured Silver Production in Africa
In value terms, semi-manufactured silver production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of silver in semi-manufactured forms were exported in Africa; with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 95%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semi-manufactured silver exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the four major exporters of silver in semi-manufactured forms, namely South Africa, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Tanzania, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Uganda (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +63.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest semi-manufactured silver supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports. These countries were followed by Tanzania and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 17%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +80.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 56%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+15.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Semi-Manufactured Silver Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of silver in semi-manufactured forms were imported in Africa; waning by -7% on the year before. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, semi-manufactured silver imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of silver in semi-manufactured forms in Africa, constituting 79% of total import. Egypt (X tons) held a 5.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (5.6%). The following importers - South Sudan (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest semi-manufactured silver importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
