The African ski-suit market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after five years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. Overall, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 119% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ski-suit exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the main exporter of ski-suits (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles) in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by South Africa (12%) and Namibia (5.2%). Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ski-suit exports from Tunisia stood at -9.5%. At the same time, Morocco (+33.8%), South Africa (+19.6%), Congo (+10.3%) and Namibia (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2021. Morocco (+13 p.p.), South Africa (+11 p.p.), Namibia (+4 p.p.) and Congo (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -21.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest ski-suit supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +39.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ski-suit imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Angola (X units), distantly followed by Niger (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Algeria (X units) were the major importers of ski-suits (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles), together constituting 81% of total imports. The following importers - South Africa (X units), Ghana (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Niger ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

Niger, with a CAGR of +49.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
