Skim Milk Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African skim milk market decreased by -3.9% to $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the market value increased by 8.9%. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Skim Milk Production in Africa

In value terms, skim milk production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Tanzania (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together comprising 46% of total production. Kenya, Niger, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Skim Milk Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of skim milk decreased by -4.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 47%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 35% share of total exports. Uganda (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Uganda ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +5.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Skim Milk Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of skim milk increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +54.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, skim milk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mauritania (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Libya (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the key importers of skim milk, together committing 81% of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Sudan (with a CAGR of +28.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Botswana ($X) and Libya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 55% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia and South Sudan, which together accounted for a further 26%.

South Sudan, with a CAGR of +22.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
