Mineral Wool Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the African mineral wool market, when its value decreased by -2.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, posted a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Mineral Wool Production in Africa

In value terms, mineral wool production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mineral wool exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the key exporter of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Zambia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 42% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mineral wool supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mineral Wool Imports

Imports in Africa

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures increased by 36% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mineral wool imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the key importers of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures in Africa, together resulting at near 44% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 33% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+3.3% per year) and Nigeria (+1.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
