In 2021, approx. X tons of slaked lime were exported in Africa; waning by -9.3% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, posted a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of slaked lime, namely Ghana, Tunisia, South Africa and Zambia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Egypt (X tons) held a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +38.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest slaked lime supplier in Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana amounted to -8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-5.6% per year) and Zambia (+22.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of slaked lime was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -38.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Eritrea (X tons) represented the major importers of slaked lime, together achieving 58% of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Togo (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +106.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Togo, Sudan, Eritrea, Liberia, Swaziland, Algeria and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +101.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
