Drawing Board Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African drawing board market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 86%. In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, when their volume increased by 17% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, drawing board exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), making up a 4.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Rwanda (X units), Nigeria (X units), Angola (X units) and Egypt (X units) - together made up 9.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing board exports from South Africa stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Angola (+51.8%), Nigeria (+41.7%) and Rwanda (+26.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.8% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+4.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.3 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.2 p.p.) and Angola (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest drawing board supplier in Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-3.3% per year) and Egypt (+1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces increased by 15% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, drawing board imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Libya (X units), Algeria (X units), Togo (X units), Morocco (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Kenya (X units), Ghana (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Tanzania (X units) represented the main importer of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces in Africa, making up 72% of total import. Tunisia (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest drawing board importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 30% of total imports. Libya, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Togo, Mozambique and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
