In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of smoked fish other than salmon and herring, comprising 32% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together committing a 50% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked fish other than salmon and herring exports from South Africa stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Mozambique (+52.5%), Guinea (+37.7%), Gambia (+25.3%), Sierra Leone (+8.1%) and Ghana (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guinea (+10 p.p.), Mozambique (+6.9 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+4.5 p.p.), Gambia (+4.1 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-2.7 p.p.) and Namibia (-32.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplier in Africa, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.4% share.
In South Africa, exports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring declined by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+9.3% per year) and Namibia (-12.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of smoked fish other than salmon and herring decreased by -12.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 6.1%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso prevails in herring structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Uganda (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked fish other than salmon and herring imports into Burkina Faso stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Uganda (+85.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +85.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uganda increased by +2.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring importing markets in Africa were Uganda ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +81.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
