The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, smoked salmon exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 95%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Morocco represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), mixing up a 29% share of total exports. Niger (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon exports, with a CAGR of +145.6% from 2012 to 2022. Niger experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 47% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 91%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, Mauritius (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the largest importers of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon in Africa, together reaching approx. 30% of total imports. Togo (X tons) held an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (6.2%). Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Mali (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Benin (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +63.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 37% share of total imports. Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Mali, Madagascar, Seychelles, Benin, South Africa and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
