Snail Market Size in Africa

The African snail market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of snails (except sea snails) exported in Africa contracted slightly to X tons, reducing by -1.7% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, snail exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.9% share of total exports.

Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of snails (except sea snails). At the same time, Senegal (+17.3%) and Algeria (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal increased by +2.6 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest snail supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 5.3% share.

In Morocco, snail exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-4.9% per year) and Algeria (+0.8% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Snail imports contracted notably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -43.4% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 688% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snail imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 325%. Ghana represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 62% of total imports. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Morocco (12%) and South Africa (6.7%). Zambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -14.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+146.1%), Morocco (+44.8%), Zambia (+20.0%) and Namibia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +146.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Namibia, Morocco, South Africa and Zambia increased by +14, +12, +6.7 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 72% of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +92.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 56% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 451%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
