The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, sodium nitrate exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 131%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of sodium nitrate, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sodium nitrate. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest sodium nitrate supplier in Africa.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 74%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, the amount of sodium nitrate imported in Africa surged to X tons, rising by 21% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 307% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sodium nitrate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 375% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of sodium nitrate in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Nigeria (11%), Ghana (7.7%) and Zambia (5.1%). Algeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sodium nitrate imports into South Africa stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Mozambique (+132.5%), Djibouti (+34.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+30.0%), Ghana (+26.9%), Algeria (+19.0%), Tunisia (+17.0%), Kenya (+16.1%), Morocco (+14.5%), Zimbabwe (+8.4%), Egypt (+8.2%) and Nigeria (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +132.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Algeria, Mozambique, Tunisia, Djibouti and Kenya increased by +8.5, +7, +5.5, +3.9, +3.5, +3.1, +2.3, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sodium nitrate in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+19.6% per year) and Ghana (+15.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
