Soft Drink Market Size in Africa
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the African soft drink market, when its value decreased by -3% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Soft Drink Production in Africa
In value terms, soft drink production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of soft drinks was finally on the rise to reach X litres after three years of decline. In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Zambia (X litres) and South Africa (X litres) dominates exports structure, together achieving 73% of total exports. Uganda (X litres), Ghana (X litres), Egypt (X litres), Togo (X litres), Tanzania (X litres), Senegal (X litres), Algeria (X litres) and Morocco (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +50.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest soft drink supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 76% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Algeria, Tanzania, Ghana and Morocco, which together accounted for a further 18%.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +42.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 9.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per litre), while Ghana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of soft drinks increased by 20% to X litres, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), distantly followed by South Africa (X litres), Libya (X litres), Botswana (X litres) and Ghana (X litres) represented the main importers of soft drinks, together creating 46% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Morocco (X litres), Mali (X litres), Senegal (X litres), Namibia (X litres), Swaziland (X litres), Nigeria (X litres) and Zimbabwe (X litres) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Democratic Republic of the Congo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the soft drinks imports, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+31.6%), Botswana (+29.4%), Morocco (+19.9%), Swaziland (+16.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+14.6%), Namibia (+12.8%), Senegal (+10.7%), South Africa (+7.9%), Zimbabwe (+4.8%) and Ghana (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Libya (-3.7%) and Nigeria (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17 p.p.), Botswana (+5.7 p.p.), Mali (+2.7 p.p.), Morocco (+2.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-1.5 p.p.), Nigeria (-6.7 p.p.) and Libya (-8.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Libya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per litre), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
