In 2021, the amount of soups and broths exported in Africa shrank to X tons, dropping by -9% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 23%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, soups exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal represented the main exporter of soups and broths in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together constituting a 33% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to soups exports from Senegal stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Ghana (+12.5%) and Nigeria (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.2%) and Egypt (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal increased by +22 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest soups supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 10% share.

In Senegal, soups exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+1.6% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of soups and broths imported in Africa amounted to X tons, increasing by 1.9% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soups imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mali (X tons), distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) were the key importers of soups and broths, together generating 55% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons) and Togo (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to soups imports into Mali stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+32.0%), Niger (+27.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.2%), Somalia (+16.8%), Guinea-Bissau (+16.0%), Mauritania (+11.4%), Gambia (+8.4%), Mozambique (+7.6%), Togo (+7.4%), Guinea (+5.0%) and Ghana (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+6.6 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.2 p.p.), Niger (+4 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.5 p.p.) and Somalia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -3% and -8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest soups importing markets in Africa were Mali ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 36% share of total imports. Ghana, Niger, Guinea, Somalia, Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +30.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
