The African soya sauce market totaled $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption posted a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soya sauce production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a strong increase. In 2022, the amount of soya sauce exported in Africa fell dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -21.4% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, soya sauce exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), making up an 8.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+330.4%), Tunisia (+137.2%) and Nigeria (+50.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +330.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia increased by +8.8, +1.8 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest soya sauce supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 2.5% share.
In South Africa, soya sauce exports plunged by an average annual rate of -7.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+45.2% per year) and Egypt (-10.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, soya sauce export price decreased by -7.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of soya sauce were imported in Africa; with an increase of 7.8% against 2021. Overall, imports recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, soya sauce imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 33% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total imports. Egypt (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +46.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest soya sauce importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 45% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +46.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 4.9%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
