Sparkling Wine Market Size in Africa

The African sparkling wine market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sparkling wine, when their volume decreased by -15.9% to X litres. In general, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X litres, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Tunisia (X litres) and Rwanda (X litres) - each resulted at a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sparkling wine exports from South Africa stood at -7.2%. At the same time, Rwanda (+153.3%) and Tunisia (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +153.3% from 2012-2022. Tunisia (+1.9 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sparkling wine supplier in Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

In South Africa, sparkling wine exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+6.4% per year) and Rwanda (+126.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sparkling wine export price increased by +10.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 50%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Rwanda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Sparkling wine imports skyrocketed to X litres in 2022, rising by 80% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +97.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, resulting at X litres, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), South Africa (X litres), Ghana (X litres), Cameroon (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Angola (X litres) and Rwanda (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sparkling wine imports into Nigeria stood at +8.6%. At the same time, Rwanda (+35.4%), Ghana (+26.0%), Cameroon (+19.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.5%), South Africa (+13.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+13 p.p.), Ghana (+2.6 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.9 p.p.), Rwanda (+1.9 p.p.), Cameroon (+1.8 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -14.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparkling wine in Africa, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +10.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+32.1% per year) and Cameroon (+22.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, reducing by -46.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Nigeria ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
