Spinach Market Size in Africa

The African spinach market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spinach Production in Africa

In value terms, spinach production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 63%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kenya (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of spinach production, accounting for 84% of total volume. Moreover, spinach production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), sevenfold.

In Kenya, spinach production increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (-2.8% per year) and Tunisia (+1.5% per year).

The average spinach yield skyrocketed to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 19% on the previous year's figure. The yield indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach yield decreased by -14.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the spinach yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of spinach production in Africa dropped to X ha, with a decrease of -4.5% compared with 2021 figures. The total harvested area indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach harvested area increased by +68.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of spinach increased by 44% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spinach exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (5.1%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+69.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Morocco increased by +22 and +5.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spinach supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In South Africa, spinach exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-7.2% per year) and Morocco (+57.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -15.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of spinach were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 64%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spinach imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Lesotho (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented the major importer of spinach in Africa, committing 78% of total import. South Africa (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +36.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest spinach importing markets in Africa were Mozambique ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 44% share of total imports. Lesotho, Morocco, Seychelles, Nigeria, South Africa and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +40.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -16.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
