Spindles and spindle flyer exports fell dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -45.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 276% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spindles and spindle flyer exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 142%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. Cameroon (X kg), Morocco (X kg), Tanzania (X kg), Botswana (X kg) and Swaziland (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spindles and spindle flyer exports from South Africa stood at -5.8%. At the same time, Morocco (+40.2%), Tanzania (+38.4%) and Cameroon (+18.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-21.3%) and Swaziland (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Cameroon, Morocco and Tanzania increased by +23, +3.8, +2.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spindles and spindle flyer supplier in Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-25.0% per year) and Cameroon (+21.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of spindles and spindle flyers, spinning ring and ring travellers decreased by -53.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 135%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spindles and spindle flyer imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 167%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importer of spindles and spindle flyers, spinning ring and ring travellers in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together constituting a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spindles and spindle flyers, spinning ring and ring travellers imports, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burundi (+30.0%), Egypt (+12.4%), Tunisia (+12.2%), Kenya (+8.0%), Morocco (+7.6%) and Mauritius (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa and Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-4.0%), Tanzania (-7.7%), Zambia (-17.5%) and Namibia (-21.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Egypt, Burundi and Tunisia increased by +46, +7.9, +5.2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest spindles and spindle flyer importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +45.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
