Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grape wine spirits imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X litres, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2022. Equatorial Guinea (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X litres), Kenya (X litres) and Ghana (X litres). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total imports. Cameroon (X litres), Angola (X litres), Nigeria (X litres), Tanzania (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) held a little share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc. At the same time, Cameroon (+38.7%), Ghana (+11.1%), Tanzania (+7.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.9%) and Kenya (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-2.3%), Namibia (-7.4%), Nigeria (-8.6%), Equatorial Guinea (-9.6%) and Angola (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+10 p.p.), Cameroon (+4.3 p.p.), Ghana (+4 p.p.), Kenya (+2.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria, Namibia, Angola and Equatorial Guinea saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -5.4%, -6.4% and -10.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc in Africa, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +14.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+12.2% per year) and Namibia (-4.1% per year).
