Plastic Support Market Size in Africa

The African plastic support market was estimated at $X in 2022, growing by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support exports amounted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 44% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Kenya (12%), Tunisia (6.8%) and Morocco (6%). Botswana (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+84.5%), Mauritius (+28.8%), Morocco (+7.0%) and Tunisia (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +84.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-5.5%) and Egypt (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+12 p.p.), Botswana (+3.3 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.9 p.p.), Morocco (+2.7 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kenya and Egypt saw its share reduced by -11.4% and -16.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest plastic support supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports. Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritius and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +74.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics were imported in Africa; increasing by 1.8% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +1.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 18%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics, namely Algeria, South Africa, Morocco and Uganda, represented more than third of total import. It was followed by Tunisia (X tons), creating a 4.7% share of total imports. Sudan (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 39% share of total imports. Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
