The African plastic supports market contracted to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic supports production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics increased by 98% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic supports exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw buoyant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics, comprising 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together creating a 42% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics exports, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+5.9%) and Tunisia (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kenya (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-41.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic supports export price increased by +76.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 37%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics were imported in Africa; growing by 6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic supports imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Uganda prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2022. Burundi (X tons) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (5.9%). South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Angola (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Uganda increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burundi (+61.0%), Ghana (+51.2%), Angola (+26.5%), Nigeria (+22.9%), Tunisia (+21.2%), Cameroon (+18.9%), South Africa (+12.9%) and Morocco (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burundi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +61.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Burundi (+8.6 p.p.), Uganda (+7.5 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.9 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-2.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics in Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uganda totaled +8.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+22.6% per year) and Morocco (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -14.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
