For the fifth year in a row, the African stainless steel sink market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 4.9% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, stainless steel sink production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +51.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of stainless steel sinks and wash basins increased by 1.9% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stainless steel sink exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X units), generating a 5.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X units) and Egypt (X units) - each resulted at a 3.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Rwanda (+79.2%), Morocco (+28.2%) and Egypt (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +79.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Rwanda (+5.7 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest stainless steel sink supplier in Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 3% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 1.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+38.7% per year) and Egypt (-2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 26%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of stainless steel sinks and wash basins imported in Africa totaled X units, growing by 2.8% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stainless steel sink imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of stainless steel sink imports in 2021 were Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Kenya (X units), Ghana (X units), Nigeria (X units), Egypt (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Libya (X units), together recording 64% of total import. Senegal (X units), Angola (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Mozambique (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +26.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 34% of total imports. Libya, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Angola, Senegal, Kenya, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +35.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
