The African hand stamp market declined modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, shipments abroad of stamps for use in the hand increased by 14% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hand stamp exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. Rwanda (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.3% share, followed by Kenya (6.2%). Morocco (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hand stamp exports from South Africa stood at -3.4%. At the same time, Rwanda (+93.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-1.3%) and Morocco (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+6.3 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hand stamp supplier in Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 1.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+0.4% per year) and Morocco (-17.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 60%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of stamps for use in the hand in Africa shrank to X units, which is down by -2.4% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, hand stamp imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 44%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

The purchases of the twelve major importers of stamps for use in the hand, namely Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Libya, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Angola, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hand stamp importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports. Kenya, Ghana, Libya, Mozambique, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Angola, Tanzania, Nigeria and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
