Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, starter motor exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Tunisia (X units) was the main exporter of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators, comprising 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), making up a 22% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter motor exports from Tunisia stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+36 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-40 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Sierra Leone ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 93% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 10% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, starter motor export price increased by +60.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X units of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators were imported in Africa; picking up by 20% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, starter motor imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 30% of total imports. Algeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Egypt (10%), Botswana (9.4%), Morocco (8.1%) and Tunisia (5.8%). Ethiopia (X units), Ghana (X units), Libya (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter motor imports into South Africa stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Botswana (+19.2%), Morocco (+18.1%), Egypt (+18.1%), Tunisia (+11.1%), Ethiopia (+6.4%), Kenya (+6.2%) and Algeria (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-3.9%) and Libya (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Botswana, Morocco and Tunisia increased by +6.5, +6.3, +5.2 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 54% share of total imports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
