Static Converter Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African static converter market decreased by -24.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a moderate expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Static Converter Production in Africa

In value terms, static converter production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +5.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, exports of static converters in Africa reached X units, with an increase of 4.3% compared with the previous year. In general, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 211% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, static converter exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +109.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Tunisia dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), comprising a 6.4% share of total exports. Morocco (X units), Egypt (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Cameroon (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the static converters exports, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+11.4%), Sierra Leone (+9.3%) and Cameroon (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+39 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -6% and -17.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest static converter supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +19.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of static converters decreased by -38.8% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, static converter imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), achieving a 5% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X units), Egypt (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Tanzania (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Angola (X units) and Morocco (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+17.1%), Burkina Faso (+16.8%), Ethiopia (+13.7%), Tanzania (+5.1%), Egypt (+4.4%) and South Africa (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-4.0%) and Morocco (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Algeria increased by +4.5 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest static converter importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Morocco, Tanzania, Angola, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +11.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 73% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 91% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
