While the share of Tunisia (+4.5 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest straight saw blade supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
In South Africa, straight saw blade exports shrank by an average annual rate of -17.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+23.0% per year) and Morocco (+47.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, straight saw blade imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Malawi (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Togo (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Mali (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +15.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+23.1%), Malawi (+16.1%), Djibouti (+11.6%), Morocco (+7.9%), Ghana (+6.7%), South Africa (+2.2%) and Kenya (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-1.2%), Mali (-4.1%), Algeria (-14.0%) and Egypt (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Morocco, Malawi, Kenya, Togo, South Africa, Ghana and Djibouti increased by +21, +5.1, +2.7, +2.3, +2.3, +2, +1.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported straight saw blades for working metal in Africa, comprising 20% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Togo, with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kenya totaled +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+16.1% per year) and Togo (+20.5% per year).
