In 2021, shipments abroad of stranded wire, ropes and cables decreased by -18.8% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, stranded wire exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together making up 74% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took near 16% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +74.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest stranded wire supplier in Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 16% share.
In South Africa, stranded wire exports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+13.8% per year) and Morocco (+11.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, stranded wire export price increased by +76.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of stranded wire, ropes and cables decreased by -10.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, stranded wire imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) represented the largest importer of stranded wire, ropes and cables in Africa, generating 74% of total import. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 30% of total imports. Kenya, Algeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Mozambique, Angola, Nigeria, Uganda and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +19.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 9%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
