Strawberry Market Size in Africa
The African strawberry market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Strawberry Production in Africa
In value terms, strawberry production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 118%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Egypt (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of strawberry production, accounting for 72% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), threefold. South Africa (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 1.8% share.
In Egypt, strawberry production increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Morocco (+1.0% per year) and South Africa (+5.2% per year).
In 2022, the average strawberry yield in Africa reached X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 7.3%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the strawberry yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of strawberries production in Africa shrank modestly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The total harvested area indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry harvested area decreased by -13.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Strawberry Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of strawberries was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, strawberry exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving a 6.7% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest strawberry supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +39.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -9.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Strawberry Imports
Imports in Africa
Strawberry imports shrank to X tons in 2022, reducing by -7.4% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, strawberry imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented the main importers of strawberries, together achieving 72% of total imports. The following importers - Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +49.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Libya ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Namibia, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan, Botswana, Seychelles, Mozambique, Algeria and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
Among the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +41.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
