In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates, when their volume decreased by -10% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Namibia (X tons) was the key exporter of sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates, constituting 51% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (9.2%) and Zambia (5.2%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each recorded a 6% share of total exports.

Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates exports, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+8.3%) and Madagascar (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mali (-2.8%), Egypt (-6.6%), Zambia (-15.9%) and South Africa (-20.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Namibia (+46 p.p.), Madagascar (+7 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zambia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -53.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) emerged as the largest sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Namibia amounted to +18.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-20.9% per year) and Madagascar (-15.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 72% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a tangible increase. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

Sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 24% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 117%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 120%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2022. Zambia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total imports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (+48 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt, Zambia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2%, -9.1% and -23.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +16.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+0.1% per year) and Morocco (+8.3% per year).
