In 2021, the African sulphonamides market decreased by -8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Senegal (X tons) represented the largest exporter of sulphonamides, constituting 44% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together committing a 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X kg), Togo (X kg), Egypt (X kg) and Tunisia (X kg) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +116.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sulphonamides supplier in Africa, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-21.1% per year) and Senegal (+21.5% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 299% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 313%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+32.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Seychelles (X tons) was the largest importer of sulphonamides, creating 52% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together making up a 28% share of total imports. The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.5% share of total imports.

Imports into Seychelles increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+21.9%), Kenya (+13.5%) and Nigeria (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-3.9%) and Egypt (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Seychelles, Kenya and Algeria increased by +20, +5.8 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest sulphonamides importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Nigeria, South Africa and Seychelles lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.

Among the main importing countries, Seychelles, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
