The African sunflower oilcake market amounted to $X in 2021, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in Africa

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of sunflower oilcake decreased by -39.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 68%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sunflower oilcake exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) was the largest exporter of sunflower oilcake, committing 61% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (13%) and Malawi (5.4%). Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sunflower oilcake exports from Tanzania stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Zambia (+58.4%) and Malawi (+46.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.4% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uganda (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia and Malawi increased by +13 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sunflower oilcake supplying countries in Africa were Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malawi and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 7.2%.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +56.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 52%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of sunflower oilcake in Africa declined dramatically to X tons, waning by -16.9% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower oilcake imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the largest importer of sunflower oilcake in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together committing a 36% share of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sunflower oilcake imports, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+7.9%) and Egypt (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kenya (-6.4%) and South Africa (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+37 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kenya and South Africa saw its share reduced by -13.7% and -23.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sunflower oilcake in Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8% share.

In Morocco, sunflower oilcake imports increased at an average annual rate of +23.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+7.0% per year) and South Africa (-8.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 38% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
