Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 52%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 48% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Uganda (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Djibouti (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - each resulted at a 9.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports from South Africa stood at -6.5%. At the same time, Djibouti (+93.4%), Mozambique (+20.2%), Uganda (+4.6%) and Morocco (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-8.2%) and Tanzania (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+10 p.p.), Uganda (+3.6 p.p.) and Djibouti (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania, Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -8.1% and -8.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sunflower-seed and safflower oil supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-5.6% per year) and Mozambique (+18.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 30% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sunflower-seed and safflower oil export price increased by +84.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 43%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons) represented the major importer of sunflower-seed and safflower oil in Africa, mixing up 67% of total import. Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +78.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Djibouti ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 48% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +72.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
