Surgical Glove Market Size in Africa
The African surgical glove market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -9.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +3.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 34%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
In value terms, surgical glove exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 139%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 75% of total exports. Uganda (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held near 9.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 8.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +87.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest surgical glove supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +7.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (+98.5% per year) and Egypt (+33.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -26.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove export price increased by +37.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of surgical gloves decreased by -5.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 42%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, surgical glove imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importer of surgical gloves in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 26% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ethiopia (7.6%), Mozambique (6.1%), Tanzania (5.9%) and Kenya (4.7%). The following importers - Angola (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ethiopia (+20.8%), Mozambique (+15.6%), Angola (+8.3%), Senegal (+7.6%), Zambia (+3.8%), Kenya (+1.6%) and Nigeria (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.9%), Libya (-3.7%), Uganda (-5.9%) and Egypt (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+7 p.p.), Ethiopia (+6.5 p.p.), Mozambique (+4.7 p.p.) and Angola (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania, Uganda and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2%, -2.7% and -13.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported surgical gloves in Africa, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 6.5% share.
In South Africa, surgical glove imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+12.3% per year) and Ethiopia (+21.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -14.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove import price increased by +73.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 53%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
