Frozen Sweet Corn Market Size in Africa

For the third consecutive year, the African frozen sweet corn market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.5% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Frozen Sweet Corn Production in Africa

In value terms, frozen sweet corn production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 28%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together comprising 95% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +3.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Frozen Sweet Corn Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of frozen sweet corn exported in Africa shrank dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -34.5% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen sweet corn exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 178%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Morocco (X tons) represented the major exporter of frozen sweet corn, committing 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together committing a 50% share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen sweet corn exports, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+20.6%), Egypt (+14.8%) and South Africa (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Kenya and Egypt increased by +35, +6.4 and +4.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest frozen sweet corn supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 83% of total exports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +27.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Frozen Sweet Corn Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of frozen sweet corn decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 68%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen sweet corn imports shrank to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons), together constituting a 42% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +35.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+55.4%), Egypt (+15.8%), Algeria (+14.0%), Botswana (+3.1%) and South Africa (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+35 p.p.) and Egypt (+9.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Botswana (-2.4 p.p.), Namibia (-6.5 p.p.) and South Africa (-12.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Namibia, Algeria and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 16%.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +42.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
