The African sugary soft drink market declined to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In 2022, shipments abroad of sugary soft drinks increased by 14% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +27.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X litres, which amounted to 53% of total exports. Tanzania (X litres) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (7%) and Algeria (5.5%). Togo (X litres), Egypt (X litres) and Ghana (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+81.5%), Tanzania (+49.7%), Ghana (+37.5%), Algeria (+9.8%) and Egypt (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +81.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+19 p.p.), South Africa (+7.5 p.p.) and Zambia (+7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +8.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+43.2% per year) and Algeria (+8.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, reducing by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +92.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugary soft drinks in Africa, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Libya ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.6% share.
