Organic Pigments Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African organic pigments market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, organic pigments production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments were exported in Africa; growing by 25% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, organic pigments exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 54% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Kenya (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 36% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to organic pigments exports from South Africa stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Kenya (+6.8%) and Morocco (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Morocco and Kenya increased by +18, +8.3 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest organic pigments supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+3.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-10.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -19.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments, when their volume increased by 9.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 69%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, organic pigments imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented the largest importer of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments in Africa, making up 82% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest organic pigments importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Algeria, Kenya, Tunisia, Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mauritius and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +16.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
