Madagascar represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 69% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (7.8%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total exports.

Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the synthetic organic products used as fluorescent brightening agents exports, with a CAGR of +95.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+42.3%), Egypt (+19.7%) and South Africa (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zambia (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Madagascar (+69 p.p.), Kenya (+7.1 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Zambia saw its share reduced by -12.6% and -54.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 77% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +68.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fluorescent brightening agents imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +36.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 32%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
