In 2021, the African non-chicken table egg market increased by 0.7% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Non-Chicken Table Egg Production in Africa

In value terms, non-chicken table egg production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Tunisia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 70% share of total production. South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uganda (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of table eggs, excluding hen eggs increased by 8.6% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 191%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 238%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia represented the largest exporter of table eggs, excluding hen eggs in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 44% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (9.8%), Rwanda (6.1%), Swaziland (5.9%) and Zambia (5.2%). Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +25.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+71.2%), Rwanda (+40.1%), Nigeria (+21.6%) and South Africa (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.2% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+33 p.p.), Rwanda (+6.1 p.p.), Zambia (+5.2 p.p.), South Africa (+3.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia and Swaziland saw its share reduced by -10.2% and -39.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest non-chicken table egg supplier in Africa, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia stood at +20.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+1.8% per year) and Namibia (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of table eggs, excluding hen eggs increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, namely Libya, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Liberia (X tons) took a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (6.6%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +80.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-chicken table egg importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Guinea-Bissau ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Liberia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Liberia, with a CAGR of +63.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
