In value terms, iron household articles exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Rwanda (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held near 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+109.1%), Rwanda (+49.6%), Tunisia (+20.7%), Ethiopia (+14.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.9%), Nigeria (+6.9%) and Kenya (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +109.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-2.7%) and Togo (-20.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+9.8 p.p.), South Africa (+9.4 p.p.), Tunisia (+7.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.7 p.p.), Angola (+1.7 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iron household articles supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+1.1% per year) and Tunisia (+14.2% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, iron household articles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Libya ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 35% of total imports. South Africa, Morocco, Ghana, Tanzania, Sudan, Senegal, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +41.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
